Giuseppe Conte, in an interview with Fatto, accuses Giorgia Meloni of acting “as a party leader” and of having created, with the suspension of Schengen towards Spain, «a very serious precedent» for Italy. A reading that, however, appears at least partial and risks ignoring an obvious element: the migration issue is not an isolated battle of the Italian government, but a topic now shared by several European governments, even of very different political orientations.

The point is not to establish whether Meloni’s choice was appropriate or not. It is legitimate to question its necessity, proportionality, and effectiveness. But claiming that Rome has simply turned Schengen into a propaganda tool means neglecting the European framework. The rules of Schengen indeed allow member states to temporarily reintroduce internal border controls in the presence of a serious threat to public order or internal security, as an exceptional and proportionate measure.

There is also a political element that makes Conte’s accusation even weaker. Just two days ago, on August 10, Meloni published a joint message on immigration together with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The two leaders, although belonging to different political families, claimed a strict line against uncontrolled immigration, calling for more repatriations and also repatriation centers in third countries. It is therefore difficult to describe Meloni’s position as that of a leader acting exclusively for party logic. The comparison with Denmark rather shows that there is a broader European orientation, transversal to the political alignments, on the need to strengthen border control and combat irregular immigration.
