Forget the future of democracy. In the Young Democrats, accusations, excommunications, and even harsh epithets fly. This is reported by an investigation by Il Foglio, which collects testimonies from several former activists and members of the under-30 Pd, increasingly intolerant towards what they describe as a sectarian drift. A seventeen-year-old from Puglia says: “The Young Democrats called me a fascist just because I vote Yes in the justice referendum, can you believe it?”.
Words that reflect the atmosphere in the youth circles: those who are not aligned, who defend reformism or even just express unorthodox positions, are isolated. “I have a lot of repressed anger towards those people. I feel like – he explains – throwing a table out the window when I remember these things.” Under Elly Schlein’s leadership, the youth wing of the Democrats would have turned into “a small intolerant church, with its dogmas, its excommunications, and the clenched fist as a symbol of faith.” In local circles, some young people explain, it takes very little to end up in the crosshairs: “It’s easy in there to feel like outsiders. Just don’t take a photo with a clenched fist.”
TgL7a, Meloni-Schlein: dangerous encounter in Mentana’s studio
Giorgia Meloni and Elly Schlein, both guests of Enrico Mentana. The announcement was made by the TgLa7 director himself …
The episodes recounted border on the grotesque. A boy was mocked for weeks for showing up at a meeting wearing a branded polo shirt. “He was accused of being right-wing for a 60-euro Ralph Lauren,” recalls a Roman activist. Others tell of pressure to renounce positions considered too moderate or pro-Israel. “More than a political organization, it seemed like an after-school or a clique of little friends,” summarizes a former member. And it is on the justice referendum that the most evident fracture would have occurred. “When I collaborated with right-wing forces for the Yes, they accused me of throwing the party away,” the boy says again. The result, the interviewees denounce, is a “repellent, elitist, sectarian” environment, where pluralism is now a memory and where many young reformists choose to leave quietly, leaving a youth wing increasingly homogeneous and radicalized.
