The Chamber’s Plenary, by secret ballot, approved with 206 yes and 133 no the proposal of the majority rapporteur in the authorization committee to deny the acquisition of the chats of the deputy and former undersecretary of justice, Andrea Delmastro, by the Prosecutor’s Office. But the intervention of the PD secretary Elly Schlein was not missing.
“Parliament today is called to make a decision that goes far beyond the specific case on which it must rule – the words of the PD secretary -. Because the vote we are about to cast is not only a vote that will say a lot about the case involving Honorable Del Mastro, but also and above all about the relationship between Parliament and the judiciary, about the way the prerogatives provided by the Constitution and those of the members of the Authorization Committee are understood, and more deeply about the idea of legality held by the majority currently governing the country and putting into practice when one of its members is involved two weights and two measures. Justice zealots with opponents and hyper-guarantors always with their own party colleagues”.
And again: “The Prime Minister had chosen very clear words, she had said that she would no longer cover anyone. Why is the Prime Minister doing the opposite? Allow the acquisition of those conversations and let the truth emerge. Allow every doubt to finally be clarified. Transparency produces exactly this effect, it closes controversies, strengthens the credibility of institutions and restores trust to citizens. For years we have heard members of Brothers of Italy from the opposition benches argue that those who exercise public functions have the duty to undergo every verification because the credibility of institutions also passes through the willingness not to evade any control. Then, once in government, this principle suddenly changed. Transparency continues to be invoked only if it concerns someone else, never oneself, and I ask myself why the rules change every time the person involved belongs to the close circle of the Prime Minister”.
“We ask you not to prevent the search for truth in a trial for facts connected to the mafias otherwise we never want to hear you mention Paolo Borsellino again – Schlein concluded – and to say that he would have been a minister of this government, because the memory of the servants of the State who sacrificed their lives in the fight against the mafias belongs to everyone, belongs to the Constitution and today would suggest voting all together to let the magistrates who fight the mafias do their job”.
