A nightmare summer that the Minister for the Family, Eugenia Roccella, will never forget. A drama that lasted over a month, then the discovery: yesterday morning, in the waters of Lake Vico, the body of Luigi Cavallari’s husband, 84 years old, was finally recovered. The body was located at a depth of 18 meters, at the end of a massive search operation that engaged specialized personnel and equipment for weeks. On site, topographers from the provincial fire brigade command of Viterbo, the local command unit, aquatic rescuers from the area, and diving units from Naples, Milan, and Taranto worked. The use of sonar and underwater robots was also crucial. The operations proved particularly difficult due to the characteristics of Lake Vico.

Great depths, reduced visibility, and muddy bottoms complicated the rescuers’ work, making it necessary to use specialized technologies to scan the area where the man had disappeared. The minister wanted to write a message to announce the news and thank the rescuers: “Today closes a period of heartbreaking waiting. I want to thank from the bottom of my heart the team, who with so much humanity and dedication searched for my beloved Luigi until his recovery. Also the Prefecture of Viterbo that coordinated the operations, the firefighters with their operational coordination, police, carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza who participated in the searches, the institutions and the inhabitants of Ronciglione who for a lifetime have been like a big family to us.”

The minister then added: “Finding Luigi does not ease the pain of separation but gives back to me, our children, the relatives, and the many people who knew and loved him, the possibility of that ‘correspondence of loving feelings’ which is the deep bond between the living and those no longer in this world.” Messages of closeness have come from government leaders, majority and opposition forces, as well as from the President of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa, and the President of the Chamber, Lorenzo Fontana. An autopsy will now be performed on Cavallari’s body to clarify whether the 84-year-old died from drowning or after suffering a sudden illness immediately after the dive. This remains the last piece to clarify in a story that has kept the minister’s family on edge for over a month.
