All this next to the Pd symbol. Marattin observed: «When I was active in the center-left, these things were only said by Communist Refoundation and Revolutionary Socialism.

And this is the Pd, eh. The pivot party of the coalition. Then there are Avs and M5S, who go to the square with those carrying Hamas and Hezbollah flags. The media, all focused only on Vannacci who, thanks to their echo chamber, takes votes from the center-right, have avoided reflecting on what is happening in the center-left. Schlein, in 2024, representing Enrico Berlinguer on the Pd card, did not just make a sentimental choice, but a truth operation: she lowered the mask of a Pd that inside, even with the left Dc coach flies (increasingly uncomfortable), has remained in that past and still venerates Berlinguer as its secular saint.

The USSR was devouring half of Europe and Berlinguer, at that time, defined Stalin as «the best friend and teacher of youth, the defender of peace and the champion of the liberation of humankind».

OTHER TIMES
It will be said that those were other times. But Berlinguer always remained a communist, he never made self-criticisms, nor did he recognize the horror of communism, nor did he abandon the Party which he actually led all his life. Certainly after the destalinization of Moscow, he never repeated those words, but even in the seventies he affirmed the ethical superiority of Eastern European regimes over capitalist ones. This is the history of the Pci. Is it coming back, albeit in different forms?

Berlusconi’s best student, Massimo D’Alema, according to recent reports, has reappeared in the debate on the broad field, with an initiative of ItalianiEuropei in which Schlein participated. D’Alema is the one who in May 1995, as secretary of the Pds, visited the City of London and in that temple of capitalism claimed credit for privatizations and said that the Left wanted a “liberal revolution” in Italy.

After 25 years, in 2020, in the book Grande è la confusione sotto il cielo, D’Alema appears very changed. And it is interesting to read his considerations on Putin’s Russia and on the «extraordinary modernization of China» and its «forceful re-emergence as a great world power». This international framework, which sees the US and the West under attack, also explains the Pd’s regression towards the past.
