It is late August and it is hot. No one denies it, no one tries to hide the heat under the carpet. At most, outside the windows, closed, of those who still think that the air conditioner can be turned on in summer to avoid discomfort. However, if on Ferragosto day, after a barbecue in the woods or under the umbrella at the Carlotta baths, you happen to come across the pages of certain newspapers, at that point the risk of illness would suddenly become more real.
For example, if while absentmindedly scrolling through the pages of Repubblica your eye fell on what appears to be the story of an Italian-style August 15th – paddle ball and croissant on the shore – you would instead be caught off guard by the tale of a world, ours, close to extinction. Not that the newspaper has discovered the imminence of a definitive nuclear conflict, which in a context of severe international hostilities would undoubtedly be news to pay attention to: the news is that it is hot on Ferragosto, and that because of this we will all die.

This paraphrase of the story by Antonio Scurati in the newspaper founded by Scalfari is neither particularly excessive nor misleading, since more than once, starting from the title of the double page, the hypothesis of the Apocalypse is hinted at. However, Scurati offers very little shadow, since Saturday could be “the last Ferragosto of humanity” if, as the author suggests, one does not cultivate “the subtle anguish that poisons these days.” An anguish made of “bathers collapsed on their sunbeds” who become “open sarcophagus coffins” in a supreme exercise of conceptual framing: on the beach, since the world began, people go there precisely with the intention of surrendering to that languor that recalls death.

A reading shared by the left infosphere which, through Scurati’s pen, is enriched with picturesque convolutions and fantastic journeys: the intolerance towards immigrants becomes a valve to vent the anguish caused by the heat, even the Ceuta crisis, with the consequent suspension of Schengen, would be a decoy instrumental to censoring the discourse on the climate crisis. And eco-anxiety becomes “the only form of lucidity,” which may also be true if the sample is victims of heatstroke. The same eco-anxiety for which Scurati’s colleague, Annarita Briganti, says she cannot sleep, just before confessing – at this point presumably with a playful intention – that she keeps the air conditioner off despite owning it.
The suggestion for next summer could therefore be to turn it on, the air conditioner, to avoid becoming active agents of psychological terror propaganda about a condition that is recognized and that precisely in its recognition becomes manageable. And to manage it best, a well-conditioned room where ideas can avoid such ideological quagmire would be useful.
