Not even 48 hours have passed since the triumph of the Red Furies, and a conspiracy theory has exploded on X, based on a video shot in the stadium’s belly, at the exit of Argentina’s locker room, shortly before the match’s kick-off.
In the footage — re-shared by more than one account, with millions of total views — some Albiceleste players are seen with extremely tense faces, some visibly emotional like Enzo Fernandez, and Lisandro Martinez also appears troubled. And then you hear Leo Messi’s voice, trying to calm his teammates: “Let’s stay calm, guys. Let’s forget everything else. Let’s forget everything. Let’s just think about playing.”

That was enough to unleash the conspiracy theorists, who claim that something very serious must have happened — in the locker rooms or before the match — “to put two key players in that state.” And then Messi’s phrase about “forgetting everything“: but forgetting what? In the various posts spreading the theory that the World Cup final was not what we were told, there is talk of possible “threats to the players, put under pressure or forced to accept something they could not refuse.” And also of “a secret agreement, of pressure from above by FIFA or colossal financial interests.”
In short, Argentina would have taken the field heavily influenced, at best, if not outright playing to lose in the most extreme thesis. The subdued performance of Scaloni’s team — totally apathetic and unable even to make a single shot on goal, something never seen in a World Cup final — gave further arguments to the conspiracy theorists, as did the expulsion of Fernandez himself, evidently uneasy, and Scaloni’s strange substitutions.

These are simple speculations multiplied by the typical virality of social media. If we only consider the pre-match video, which is all we have, what we see is simply a group under maximum stress before a historic final: Enzo Fernandez and Lisandro Martinez appear tense, as is normal in a high-pressure context, while Messi utters routine captain’s words, inviting his teammates to put everything else aside and focus only on the match that is worth a career. There is no evidence of anything other than Spain’s superiority over Argentina, much to the chagrin of the conspiracy theorists.
