Matteo Salvini and Attilio Fontana met at the Rimini Meeting. The atmosphere was “cordial,” with smiles, a couple of photos for the archives, and a sincere handshake. But no face-to-face to discuss the internal situation of the League. There will be time for that in the coming days. Upon arriving in Romagna, Salvini had opened up to a meeting with the governor of Lombardy: “I will see him today, certainly. And I will hug him. A step aside? No, rather a step forward. Pontida? I’m not worried. It will be a celebration,” and when asked if he is willing to have greater collegiality in leading the League, he replies: “I have always been,” not before pointing out that “among the governors there is also Alberto Stefani,” the president of Veneto who would not be aligned with his colleagues on criticisms of the secretary.

Meanwhile, Attilio Fontana also arrives in Rimini, who responds to a question: “Here is also my secretary. Compatible with all the things I have to do, I will meet him with great pleasure.” The two, as mentioned, then crossed paths at the Mit pavilion (thanks to the mediation of Claudio Durigon), where Aci president Geronimo La Russa updated them on the organization of the Monza Gp (September 4-6). The rest we have already told.
WHO WILL BE THERE AND WHO WON’T
The issue to be resolved, however, is not only when and where the parties will meet, but especially who will participate in the summit. On one hand, there is a tendency to downplay the extent of the controversies, dismissing them as mere “Lombard disgruntlement and nothing more”; on the other hand, there is talk of a “front of governors” unhappy with the party line. That is why it will be important to understand whether only Fontana and Romeo will participate in the summit or if alongside the two Lombards there will also be the various Zaia, Fugatti, Fedriga, and some representative from Piedmont. And later in the day Salvini also took a few jabs: “The advice I give to everyone, inside and outside the League, is to work as much as possible and, if there are problems, talk about them within the family, because doing it in public helps Schlein and Conte. I have the suspicion,” Salvini concludes, “that someone uses the word North to talk about something else…”.
During his day at the Meeting, Salvini, between a round table and a press briefing, spoke about many political topics and those related to his ministry. Meanwhile, he said he is sure that “we will reach the natural end of the legislature and next year voting will take place after September, in autumn” and that “the League will be a protagonist, with a percentage above 10%.” Then the frontal attack on former friend Roberto Vannacci: “In Milan he presented a candidate against the center-right; in Calabria he nominated a former Forza Italia against the center-right candidate. I am not one of those who say ‘let’s bring everyone in, from Vannacci to Calenda just to get one more vote’.
You can’t attack the government every day and then ask to join it…”. Salvini also pokes the former general about the program he presented: “On abortion, I am in favor of life support centers, but I am for looking forward, not backward. Military education? Let’s let mom and dad decide…”. The salvo comes via social media and concerns the proposal of multiple voting depending on how many children a family has: “After saying he would like to open a mosque in Milan, this idea of multiple voting seems to me another big favor done to the Islamic community…”.
THE NEXT BUDGET LAW
Finally, Salvini moves from criticism to proposals: “In the Council of Ministers I will ask that there be a deviation of 20 billion in the Maneuver. Just for my fellow countrymen, 6 or 7 billion would be needed to cope with the increases in raw materials. If resources are not found by September, many construction sites risk being blocked.” Speaking of major works: “I plan to start the construction sites of the Bridge over the Strait in autumn.” Banking chapter: “Money should not be extorted from banks, it should be requested through dialogue, confrontation, and meetings with those who are earning money during a complicated period for many.” Then he launches the idea of making public transport free for all minor students: “We are discussing it with Giorgetti. It would be a nice signal for families”.
