“They compete to see who excels in scavenging on the jeweler’s case, for which legitimate defense has nothing to do with it”: Giuseppe Conte wrote on his X profile attacking the center-right parties that sided with Mario Roggero, the 72-year-old jeweler definitively sentenced to 14 years and 9 months for killing two robbers and wounding a third after the assault on his shop in the province of Cuneo on April 28, 2021. “After failing on security, with crime rampant everywhere, they found the clever recipe to shift responsibility onto citizens: dear citizens, get a weapon and take justice into your own hands,” continued the Five Star leader.
Conte, therefore, adopts the left’s line, not recognizing Mr. Roggero’s case as one of legitimate defense after having suffered a robbery. “They don’t tell us that if everyone applied the rule of ‘do-it-yourself justice’, the same jeweler would have been dead long ago,” he added. The reference is to the news that has bounced around the newspapers in recent hours: “In 2005 Mr. Roggero broke into the home of his daughter’s boyfriend, violently assaulting him and finally drawing a gun with which he threatened him and his parents. Applying the reasoning with which the government is doing propaganda on the Roggero case, the assaulted could therefore have reached him at the exit of the house and then shot him in the back?”
Finally, the little lesson: “It is the State that must guarantee our security if we do not want Italy to become a wild west. We must not resign ourselves to this swamp, to a Government that only thinks of locking itself down instead of giving answers and solutions to real problems.”
