Despite the official line of the Democratic Party being to defend Matteo Lepore after the clashes in Bologna, criticism and doubts about the management of the incident are also emerging within the party. The most contested point, as reported by ilCorriere, concerns the mayor’s decision to convene the institutional garrison in an already very tense climate: a choice that, according to several Democratic exponents, especially from the reformist area, increased the risk of infiltration by autonomists and an escalation of violence. No one says it openly, but many parliamentarians, speaking anonymously, talk about an initiative that was understandable in its intentions but politically risky.
Perplexities also emerge in public statements. Lia Quartapelle acknowledges an error in the management of the square, while defending the decision to organize the garrison. Graziano Delrio describes the dilemma facing the Democratic Party: promoting a demonstration means exposing oneself to the risk of violent infiltrations, but not holding it would have given the impression of being uninterested in the matter. A reasoning that reflects the internal discomfort and suggests that, in hindsight, the balance between opportunities and risks is not entirely positive.

Alongside these criticisms, however, the leadership group continues to rally around the mayor. Elly Schlein rejects attacks from the right, attributes responsibility for the violence to the antagonists, and reiterates that the state must shed full light on the matter. Michele De Pascale, Giorgio Gori, Stefano Bonaccini, and other administrators also rule out direct responsibility for Lepore, arguing that the clashes would have occurred anyway. However, the very fact that the Democratic Party is openly discussing the appropriateness of the garrison shows that the mayor’s line does not convince everyone and continues to fuel evident discomfort within the party.
