Further demonstration of support for the shopkeeper is given by the survey conducted by Youtrend: for 57% of Italians, the law should be changed to broaden the cases in which defense is considered legitimate. More than half of Italians, which means cross-party support, from right to left. Only 10% would prefer a tightening of self-defense laws, and 20% would be for maintaining the rule as it is now. 13% prefer not to express an opinion.
Needless to say, most of those in favor of broadening self-defense are among the center-right electorate: a full 81% of those who vote for Fratelli d’Italia, Lega, and Forza Italia are in favor. But even on the left, there are quite a few who look favorably on a broader range of cases in which to admit the use of force against aggressors. Among those who vote for Partito democratico, Movimento 5 Stelle, Alleanza Verdi Sinistra, and Italia Viva, a full 36% are in favor. More than a third of the broad field’s electorate.
