Open controversy in Legnano. We are in the Milan area and on Sunday, September 13, the city edition of the Pride is scheduled. In the event’s logo, the organizers of the march included Alberto da Giussano, a symbol of the city and also, historically, a symbol of the political party Lega. The issue was raised by the leader of Brothers of Italy in the Legnano city council, Mario Almici, who was a candidate for the city’s leadership and was defeated in the last election by the representative of the Democratic Party, the outgoing mayor Lorenzo Radice.

“I read that for the next Pride the left thought it wise to even enlist the warrior of Legnano, one of the most recognizable symbols of our city, naturally reinterpreted for the occasion with the colors of the LGBT flag,” Almici wrote on his social profiles. Then he continues fiercely. “A choice at least debatable, but there is one detail that intrigues me even more. The organizers explained to us that ‘the city belongs to everyone.’ So, a provocation comes to mind: what prevented them from bringing the march to the heart of the city, in Piazza San Magno? When it comes to reaching the main square, evidently all this desire to be ‘in the heart of Legnano’ diminishes a bit.”
At this point, the response from the mayor Lorenzo Radice arrived via an open letter: “People come before symbols. For this reason, I ask a very simple question to the center-right of Legnano: do you think LGBTQ+ people have the full right to be visible, to demonstrate, and to claim equal dignity and rights in their city? Mario Almici, moreover, had already given an answer. During the election campaign, to a specific question about Pride, he declared that he would not oppose the event and that, if he became mayor, he would first meet the organizers to get to know them and understand how they intended to organize it.”

The Legnano Pride team jumped right into the middle of the dispute without holding back. “We decided to make him ours – Alberto da Giussano, ed – and to claim him because we are queer people, but we are also and above all from Legnano.” Then they quote the Italian anthem. “If from the Alps to Sicily it is everywhere Legnano, Legnano must be the home of everyone.”
