What FdI wrote is confirmed by the numbers. According to Frontex data, attention on irregular immigration is shifting towards the western Mediterranean route. In the first six months of the year, in fact, arrivals along this route have increased by 17%, driven mainly by departures from Algeria heading towards the coasts of Spain. This is a trend opposite to that recorded on the other main migration routes: crossings in the eastern Mediterranean have decreased by 20%, while on the central Mediterranean route, which concerns Italy, the drop was even more marked, with a reduction of 52% compared to the same period last year.
Furthermore, as highlighted by the Ministry of the Interior, in a note published in response to attacks by the Spanish foreign minister, “in Italy from January of this year to today there has been a collapse in landings of irregular migrants that has been achieved precisely thanks to the policies of the Meloni government.
