The tensions that have arisen over immigration management after the events in Ceuta among European countries indicate how sensitive the issue is for public opinion and strategic for national policies. Beyond the rhetoric of the empty phrase “Europe must take care of it,” as if Europe were a single (and thinking) political entity, it is clear that every nation thinks primarily of itself, and this also happens with countries governed by the left (see the case of the Danish socialist prime minister Mette Frederiksen perfectly aligned with Giorgia Meloni).
What continues to be misunderstood is the position of the Italian left and its toasting to every immigrant, who within the game of cross-retaliations, neighboring countries send back to us. In the last few hours, five times (the immigrant that Germany sent back to us and the four expelled by Austria) Elly Schlein and company have raised their glasses as if it were New Year’s Eve.
Apart from the irrelevant numbers, what is there to celebrate? Not the right but Italy has its own needs to keep the phenomenon under control that do not change based on the color of the government, in other words, the left could not do anything different as long as it is of the idea not to give free rein to international mafias that control human trafficking (something that, truthfully and unfortunately, has happened in the past except for the brief period of Marco Minniti as Minister of the Interior in the Gentiloni government) or become the landfill where everyone can get rid of their problems. The day this mystery is revealed, we will make the toast, a toast to common sense.
