The only thing that, in her opinion, really matters – as for many Italians – is to shed full light on the management of the pandemic. Giuseppi, however, did not listen to her and went straight on his way. A path that does not foresee answers on the merits of the emergency management, but rather free attacks on the premier.

“Dear Giorgia Meloni, I have always been there and I will always be there in every venue and occasion where answers can be given to the country. I was also there today in the Covid Commission,” wrote the leader of the Five Star Movement on social media. Then, to divert attention from the pandemic issue, here is the mud on the premier: “Tell us instead in which safe the chats of your friend Delmastro with a front man of a mafia clan ended up. Tell us where the center-right Regions you shielded from questions about Covid management ended up.” And again: “Tell us when Santanchè will go to court without protections and shields on the Covid fraud investigation.” Giuseppi also allows himself the dramatic closing: “Today I spent hours accounting and responding. Do you have 5 minutes to answer Italy? We like the truth, you obviously find it painful.”

In short, Conte really cannot stay on the merits of the issue and not turn it into politics. And this Meloni, who knows very well who she is facing, had already anticipated it: “Frankly, I do not understand why former premier Giuseppe Conte did not join from the beginning the chorus of those asking for answers to the many questions left unanswered and instead chose to go on the defensive or, as in his latest statements, to ‘turn it into politics‘. It is not a trial against a person, but a duty towards a Nation that has paid a very high price.”
