It is a journalistic genre that readers of the Corriere della Sera should be used to: the fake bipartisan editorial, actually a thorough supporter. Carlo Verdelli, former director of Repubblica, practiced it yesterday. The title is “The cure the country needs,” the start is that of an observer above the fray, the message – a year, or maybe less, before the political elections is that this right wing, madam, is dangerous: it must be stopped. The cliché is well tested. First part: the inventory of national pains. Real wages frozen since 2000, public debt at 138.4% of GDP, 90,000 doctors fled from the public service, a demography that by 2080 will bring Italy to 45 million inhabitants, and so on.

Then follows the mini rhetorical concession to the opponent, useful to pose as a neutral party: “Dear fellow citizens, it would be unfair to blame the last government entirely for this unsettling picture, just as it would be illusory to think that changing the majority will magically put the Italy ship on the right course.” However… “It is undeniable, however, that things are not working, and it will not be by stirring fears or specters of enemies often more imaginary than real that the country will be guided out of the shoals…” Marco Antonio, in Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar,” uses the same technique: “I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.”

Then he turns the crowd against the conspirators, and Verdelli tries to turn Corriere readers against the governing right. Immediately after, in fact, comes the meat. The foreigner becomes the scapegoat stirred up by the “strongest forces of the executive.” The latest proof is the case of the young Algerian with a residence ban who disfigured a Moroccan girl in Milan: the “act of a madman” deplorably turned into the “symbol of the Islamic extremist who humiliates women with blood.” This is the line of the Pd and Avs, for whom the alarm about the gangs of thugs and the violence of immigrants is the result of a mistaken perception and right-wing propaganda: “Are you afraid in your cities? Found the culprit.”

SOME NUMBERS
Verdelli cites some numbers. For example, the fact that today immigrants are almost 16% of Inps insured and thus “already contribute to our pensions” (addendum for Corriere readers: they do not do it for free, but in exchange for future and deserved pensions). To conclude with the final appeal: “Dear fellow citizens, choose whoever you want but pay attention to sleight of hand, to those who turn a shadow into an eclipse. The seeds of hatred produce exuberant plants with instant growth.” In short, readers of the newspaper of what remains of the good Milanese bourgeoisie, vote for anyone but the right.

Verdelli could have listed other data, also on the treatment of women. For example, those showing how in 2024, the last year certified by Istat, foreigners – about 9% of the resident population – were responsible for 44% of the reported sexual assaults in Italy: the most represented nationality is Moroccan, followed by Romanian, Tunisian, Egyptian, and Nigerian.

AND THAT’S NOT ENOUGH…
Verdelli cites some numbers. For example, the fact that today immigrants are almost 16% of Inps insured and thus “already contribute to our pensions” (addendum for Corriere readers: they do not do it for free, but In robberies foreigners have surpassed Italians in absolute value: they committed 52% of the total and here too the record belongs to Morocco, followed by Tunisia and Egypt. In this way, however, Verdelli could not have reached where he wanted. Better to overlook. It is not an anomaly, that of such a partisan Corriere. In its history there are more illustrious precedents. And its publisher, Urbano Cairo, is the same who controls La7: the network that has made opposition journalism to the Meloni government its identity hallmark.

In an article published yesterday, Il Domani reports that on the left there is growing concern: Rai 3 is no longer the stronghold it once was; Report falters due to Sigfrido Ranucci’s blunders; Repubblica, passed to the Greek publisher Theo Kyriakou, is an unknown. “Left without a voice,” thus headlines Il Domani. But it is a strongly exaggerated news, and the left column of the front page of Cairo’s newspaper is there to prove it.
