The mayor of Bologna Matteo Lepore participated in the demonstration for Abderrahim Fakir, standing alongside the family and embracing the niece Yossra after her appeal to the crowd: “Respect, truth, justice. No revenge.” From that stage, however, the mayor chose to focus his criticism on the institutions and, indirectly, on the actions of the police forces. In fact, in an interview with Repubblica, given at the same time the officers were targeted by antagonists, here comes the jab at the police forces and the government.
Lepore spoke of “a great silence” from national politics and described the attitude of the institutions as “cold,” also responding to the accusations of Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who said the demonstration represented a public trial of the two police officers involved. Yet, reading the statements from yesterday and today, it does not seem that the left has remained silent. On the contrary, the police officers were treated almost like murderers… But so be it.

While stating that “a strong politics believes in the rule of law, it does not replace the judges” and that the outcome of the investigation must be awaited, the mayor nevertheless expressed very clear judgments on the case. “You cannot die like this,” he said, adding that those who saw the video “were shocked” and that “something definitely went wrong,” while the Prosecutor’s investigations are still ongoing.
The harshest blow comes when the mayor directly calls into question the training of the officers. After stating that “politics is offloading the issue of security onto the shoulders of the officers,” Lepore says: “When the police arrive, politics has already failed. I wonder if, for example, they are trained to deal with psychiatric problems.” Words that, in fact, put the training of the police forces in managing people in a state of psychophysical agitation under scrutiny, implying possible professional shortcomings even before the judiciary has clarified any responsibilities.
