Double victory for Italy in the men’s 50m breaststroke at the European Swimming Championships. Nicolò Martinenghi delivers a great race at the most important moment with a time of 26″57 and takes the gold, beating Simone Cerasuolo by 5 hundredths who finishes in 26.62, tied for second with the Dutch Koen de Groot. Martinenghi made the difference in the final race and returns to the top step of the European podium, outsmarting his teammate who was the real favorite before the race.
“It was a very strange race. I knew the final was different from the others. I like to enjoy the moment of the final and I get excited by these things. Repeating the win like in Rome was unthinkable until recently. It is a great form of respect towards me,” Martinenghi commented to Rai 2 after the gold.

Sara Curtis instead won the bronze medal in the 50m freestyle at the European Swimming Championships in Paris. The super Italian champion touched in 23″99, improving her own Italian record by a tenth, set on June 28 in Rome. Victory went to the Polish Katarzyna Maria Wasick in 23″84, silver to the Swedish superstar Sarah Sjoestrom, beaten by just two thousandths.
