Elly Schlein outshines Pier Luigi Bersani, another phenomenon, now a sideshow, and becomes the longest-serving secretary of the PD ever. Congratulations, some things never happen by chance, even if this really seems inexplicable. How could it have happened? This is especially asked by the voters of the broad field, terrified at the idea of seeing her run for Palazzo Chigi against Giorgia Meloni.

For three years the democratic secretary has not expressed a single political concept except systematic criticism of the government, as a stubbornly unique recipe, more than a unifying one, of her opposition leadership.

For honesty, it must be recognized that once Schlein measured herself, at the 2024 European elections, obtaining 24.1%, five points more than the 19 the party had inherited.
But it was not exactly her victory: the secretary nominated all her internal rivals, champions of preferences in the territory, in order to send them to Brussels. Antonio De Caro, Giorgio Gori, Pina Picierno, the late Matteo Ricci, Dario Nardella, Stefano Bonaccini, her former president and rival in the party primaries: all out of the way so as not to disturb the (non) puppeteer. Today times have changed a bit. Pushing away the best in the long run has not paid off: the PD oscillates between 20 and 21%, an unexciting figure.

So why doesn’t the most grumpy and highly competitive party in Italy hold its secretary accountable? The harsh analysis comes from those who slammed the door and today explain that Schlein’s longevity is all thanks to her, but it is not a compliment.

Under the appearance of ClarabElly, a verbose machine gun of words without head or tail, would hide the least democratic secretary of the democrats. The leader of Occupy PD is accused of having achieved what she promised herself: she entered Nazareno with the delicacy of an elephant and crushed the minorities like not even the Scrapper.

As a result, the party of factions has turned into a party like the others, where the boss rules under the threat of candidacies: you don’t agree, out goes the seat. The power of blocked lists.

And now, what will happen? Living off Giorgia’s shoulders, Schlein can no longer drag on too much. The primaries loom, which however the secretary faces from a disadvantaged position, to the point that she is not even the favored candidate by many party leaders and ideological reference points. Many advise her to carve out a role behind the scenes and, if she really does not want to give way to Conte, which would not be dignified for a democratic leader, at least to agree with the M5S leader to converge on Bersani as the prime minister candidate of the broad field. A choice of heart, but the woman is heartless, Lucio Dalla would sing, also from Emilia. Because, if by chance Elly runs for the leadership of the broad field and does not win, it would not be a nervous breakdown at home in the democrats, and perhaps not even a disaster, but the beginning of the end. And so, best wishes to Schlein for her record duration as secretary, which arrives two weeks before that of Giorgia Meloni at Palazzo Chigi, although certain records in politics not only have relative value but also risk being misleading, empty chimeras. May the PD keep Elly, who in the long run can do more damage to the democratic cause than Conte.
