IT SEEMS LIKE A JOKE
It seems like a joke and the Sandinista regime is indeed quite ramshackle, but it’s not funny. Moreover, already in 2021, the elections «were widely contested after Ortega had opponents and business figures arrested and annihilated dissent». It all began with the Sandinista electoral victory in 2006. The government progressively became authoritarian, but maintained a facade of pluralistic democracy. Now it has sensed the prevailing winds and is decidedly veering towards dictatorship. What winds? After 1989, in the world, the typical single-party communist regime seemed archived, sunken under its horrors and failures. It remained in China, Cuba, North Korea, and little else. But in recent years there has been a return to the old red and illiberal systems: the most striking case is that of Putin’s Russia which, around 2000, having inherited a democracy from Yeltsin, albeit imperfect and fragile, was almost on the verge of joining NATO (one will recall the Pratica di Mare summit).

However, the Russian government then resumed the old authoritarian path (including military aggressions). So too Nicaragua and others. They have been emboldened by China’s economic successes – unfortunately facilitated by the West’s blindness – and now find, around Beijing, the possibility of forming an anti-Western bloc. Which merges with Islamism (for example, the Iranian regime). On the other hand, some Western left-wing parties also seem to forget reformism and veer towards a certain radicalism. Even in the United States where Trump, for some time, has brought the danger of communism back to the center of political debate.

The policy of Western countries towards China and Russia is very important, because we are in a new cold war. Paraphrasing Mark Twain’s famous remark – in front of his obituary – we could say that the news of the death of communism, which was given in 1989, was also grossly exaggerated. Now it is evident.
