A Neapolitan hoax spins to the left. It is a multi-headed hoax, containing many others within it. It says that, since the Meloni government reinstated border controls for a month on air and sea borders with Spain, Italy is now isolated and European mechanisms are turning against us. The proof would be the “Dublin migrants,” migrants who landed on the coasts of the Peninsula and then moved north and applied for asylum in other European countries, and that now these countries – currently Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Finland, and Sweden – have decided to send them back to Italy. To be precise: to start sending them back to Italy again, and as we will see, this is a substantial difference.
On this occasion, Elly Schlein has risen from summer hibernation: “The boomerang effect of Giorgia Meloni’s propaganda stunt to suspend Schengen against Spain is outrageous.” The same is said by Giuseppe Conte (“The useless and harmful show on Ceuta and the choices on migrants have produced a nice short circuit”), Matteo Renzi (“Meloni, to chase Vannacci, broke European rules. And now Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Finland are sending back people to us who otherwise would never have returned to Italy”) and every other leader and small leader of the left. The Prime Minister confirms herself as the only topic on which the broad field stops being a Babel and manages to speak, for a few hours, the same language.
The fact that the election campaign has started justifies the vigor of the opposition, not bad faith. The Schengen agreement, which regulates free movement within the European Union, has seen five hundred suspensions in the last twenty years (Germany has just extended controls at its borders for another six months). And it has no connection with the Dublin regulations. These establish that a migrant’s protection request must be submitted to the first EU country they entered. Italy is the landing country for hundreds of thousands of migrants, and other states can ask it to take back those who then moved elsewhere (the “Dublin migrants,” precisely), so that it takes charge of their applications.

THE SEQUENCE RESET
These are things well known to the scandalized left. Because it has always been like this. Especially those who have been prime ministers know it. In the five years before Piantedosi’s decision, from 2018 to 2022, which coincides with the legislature of the Conte, Conte II, and Draghi governments, 17,605 Dublin migrants were transferred to Italy: an average of 3,521 per year. And from 2014 to 2017, when Enrico Letta, then Renzi, and finally Paolo Gentiloni succeeded each other at Palazzo Chigi, the Dublin migrants sent back to Italy were 16,767: an average of 4,192 per year. Because that’s what those treaties establish, which the governments of the time complied with.
Renzi, then, knows well the need to sacrifice immigration control to other needs. Emma Bonino, who was Foreign Minister in the Letta government, explained it in 2017: “In 2014-2016,” and therefore during the government led by the former mayor of Florence, “we asked that the coordinator be in Rome, at the Coast Guard, and that all landings took place in Italy. We made the agreement, effectively violating Dublin. At first, we did not realize it was a structural problem and not just a single summer. And we hurt ourselves.” The rest was said by Mario Mauro, who was Defense Minister under Letta: before the Renzi government, “a migrant rescued by a British ship was effectively on British territory. With the Renzi government, it was accepted that all those rescued by European missions arrived on Italian soil.”

The current government represents an exception, but of the opposite kind to that indicated by the left. On December 5, 2022, Matteo Piantedosi signed a circular blocking the return of Dublin migrants. From that day until December 31, 2025, other countries have sent about 80,000 requests to take charge of as many migrants, which Italy has rejected, thus zeroing transfers. The sequence of four-digit numbers collapsed to zero in 2023, 2024, and 2025: with the Meloni government.
It starts again now, because on June 12 the new EU Pact on migration came into force. Austria has sent back four migrants to Italy, some have been sent by Sweden. More will arrive, but Germany will have to deal with the “compensation” requested by the Rome government, which wants to count the migrants landed by German NGOs in Italian ports: 2,300 in 2026 alone. However it goes, it starts again from minus 80,000 in the first three years of government. And on the left, where the model for immigration policies is called Pedro Sánchez, they have the courage to talk about “flop” and “boomerang.”
