Brooklyn Beckham ends up at the center of controversy for a plate of spaghetti prepared on a boat, but it is not the recipe that sparked debate. The criticism was actually triggered by the choice to use seawater directly to cook the pasta. The son of David and Victoria Beckham, passionate about cooking and long interested in the world of chefs, showed everything in a video posted on TikTok.

On board the boat, Beckham takes a pot, fills it by immersing it in the sea, and then brings it to a boil. At that point, the spaghetti go in, before being seasoned with the spicy sauce from his brand Cloud23. The video quickly became the target of user comments, who joked about the choice: “hint of burnt boat fuel.” The problem, however, is not only the risk of finding an unpleasant taste in the pasta. Seawater is not suitable for cooking or washing food. It can contain bacteria, viruses, microplastics, hydrocarbons, feces or urine left by people while swimming, as well as other pollutants and contaminants from boat discharges.
It is not even the first time Beckham has chosen a similar path. Last year he had already posted a recipe in which he once again used seawater. And every summer social media fill up again with videos of people dipping friselle, mozzarella, or other foods in water before eating them. Even chef Max Mariola, recently in Hawaii, joked about the topic after rinsing ginger in the sea: “I’ll show you what’s on the shore. Corals. Corals everywhere.” A joke to show the cleanliness of those waters, but it does not change the overall issue. For Beckham, in short, the idea was probably to create summer content perfect for social media. But this time the video backfired on him: beautiful location, Italian dish, and sauce from his brand, but an ingredient definitely better left in the sea.
