Punctual as a Swiss watch, Angelo Bonelli arrives to explain that the blame lies with Giorgia Meloni, the “climate-denier” who hates nature and declares war on the environment. Trump cancels the Roadless Rule? Meloni is on the same wavelength. The fires? THEORY AND PRACTICE
Given that yes, nature must be managed by man for its own good, the point is that politicians must be measured in practice when they really manage the territory. In Rome, governed by the center-left, between November 2021 and December 2025 almost 30,000 trees were cut down (I emphasize cut down); 29,842 according to the official data of the municipal tree balance. The Campidoglio claims to have planted more than twice that number. Too bad many of those new specimens are tiny saplings, often already dry after a few months, especially with these temperatures.
While the mature tall trees – those that provided real shade, captured CO2, and tempered heat islands – have disappeared. Piazza Risorgimento and other “renewed” squares have become slabs of stone and concrete where Romans bake under the scorching summer sun. Mario Tozzi (we have to mention him, just think about it) called them “stone deserts.” Trees sometimes replaced by metal gazebos to be covered with climbers and irrigation systems that will break in no time.
Meanwhile, the mature tree heritage has been dismantled. These are Bonelli’s friends put to the test. Wouldn’t it have been better to leave the trees that were there?
Obviously not. How else would you spend public money to redo everything? To make friends and friends of friends work? And then boast about the “green.” What green? The paint green? But there’s more. Managing the territory against drought and fires does not mean planting saplings and making silly press releases.
Against fires and drought, water is needed. Hydraulic engineering works are needed: dams, reservoirs, water storage. Necessary to irrigate, mitigate floods, have reserves when it doesn’t rain. Yet, every time someone tries to design and build them, here come the assorted Bonelli supporters to say no.
That it can’t be done.

Who opposes it alongside various local communities? Italia Nostra, that is Bonelli’s friends. And down to babble about fauna, geology, and landscape. Result? Years of stalemate while the water crisis advances. Or take the Vetto dam in Emilia Romagna. Estimated cost over 500 million euros. It should meet irrigation, safety, and storage needs in a territory subject to drought. Who opposes it among others? Legambiente, always Bonelli’s friends. Meanwhile, water is lacking. Or the Campolattaro dam, in Campania.
The reservoir has existed for decades, but the connections for drinking, irrigation, and hydroelectric use have remained unfinished for over thirty years. Who opposes it? Also WWF besides the usual Italia Nostra. Always Bonelli’s friends. In short, no reservoirs but only obsessed people. Who cut down trees to replace them with metal cages. They spend public money on outrages and nonsense. Then when fires break out, here they are trumpeting with finger pointed at the government. It used to be said that environmentalists are like watermelons: green outside and red inside. Today they are watermelons but without rind. Red outside only. And with the taste of cucumber. The one they would have to swallow once they were in government.
