The Campania Democratic Party risks exploding in Ercolano. What had been celebrated just a month ago as an incredible success – Antonietta Garzia had been elected mayor with 68.6% of the votes and the Democratic list was the most voted with 30.8% – risks turning into a nightmare for the regional leadership. The acquaintances of some new councillors have come under the magnifying glass of newspapers and, above all, of the district anti-mafia directorate.

Already two of the nine elected under the Democratic symbol have been removed from the party and the majority. These are Nancy Scognamiglio and Marco Cozzolino, caught dining with Natale Suarino, a multiple offender of the Ascione-Papale Camorra clan. These acquaintances also led to the resignation of the city coordinator, Antonello Cozzolino, and the commissariat of the city section.

But the story of the Scognamiglio-Cozzolino duo has brought to light the concerns of part of the party regarding another councillor. This is Assunta Riccio, the second most voted on the Democratic list. Before the elections, a long internal controversy had consumed her: party card yes or party card no? Years ago, after abandoning Italia Viva, with which she had been elected to the city council in 2021, Riccio had knocked on the doors of Elly Schlein’s party. But shadows over her family’s activities had hindered her entry. Assunta Riccio’s name had in fact risen to national prominence following a report by Luigi Pelazza of Le Iene on Camorra affairs linked to the illegal disposal of abandoned fabrics and clothes.

Riccio’s brother, Gaetano, had been accused of illicit affairs related to the destruction of waste produced by Tommitex, a company of which Assunta is the sole shareholder and administrator. According to the judges, however, it was Gaetano who managed the company’s affairs. And it was he who had agreed with a certain Filippo Nocerino, who was responsible for concealing tons of clothes in warehouses scattered throughout Campania. A business that, as explained by Le Iene, allowed companies involved in the treatment of used clothes to save millions of euros.

From the trial that saw Nocerino and his illicit affairs as protagonists, Assunta Riccio emerged spotless. So much so that, on the eve of the Ercolano elections, the councillor presented a clean criminal record to convince the Democratic Party leaders to nominate her. And, in the end, that package of about a thousand votes for Riccio tempted the Democratic leadership. Shortly before the vote, the party card arrived and, consequently, the candidacy that led to her election. Although Riccio has not yet come under the media spotlight, now in the Democratic Party more than a few fear that nominating her was a mistake. Especially after the storm that hit the new council due to the acquaintances of Cozzolino and Scognamiglio.

ASCENT
Not only that. The newly re-elected councillor, after the initial resistance that had hindered her arrival in the Democratic Party, is making more and more progress within the party. For several months, in fact, she has started working at the secretariat of the presidency of the Campania Regional Council. Chaired by Massimiliano Manfredi, a boss of the Campania Democratic Party and brother of the mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi.

The mayor of Ercolano is managing a delicate situation; for now, he is pushing straight ahead, with the first city council set for July 27 and the establishment of a “legality pool” led by the Democratic MEP Sandro Ruotolo. However, Piero De Luca’s seat is increasingly creaking, having reached the regional top after a long back and forth. The blessing of the national secretariat had arrived, in fact, after the deputy’s father – former governor Vincenzo De Luca – had given up the dream of a third term in the Region and had supported Roberto Fico’s candidacy. Now that the power of the sheriff of Salerno has been scaled back, his son Piero’s position is far from untouchable.
