Among the hottest hypotheses under review by the executive is the extension of the power to apply preventive detention also to local police officers, albeit in well-defined contexts and situations. This is a mechanism initially introduced in February to prevent disorder and violence during public demonstrations, but which the Ministry of the Interior now aims to use also in combating the so-called urban malamovida. An idea that gained momentum precisely following the events in Rome that aroused outrage and concern for the seriousness of what happened. The script, in fact, was an open challenge to the authorities. This initiative follows the path traced by the first interventions last February, culminating with the final approval by the Chamber in April. That package already provided for very heavy sanctions, such as imprisonment from six months to three years for anyone found outside their home without justified reason carrying a knife with a blade length equal to or greater than eight centimeters, with even harsher penalties if the episode occurs on board buses or trains. At the same time, the regulation targets the merchants themselves, punishing the sale of blades to minors with fines ranging from 500 to 3,000 euros.

INCREASE IN STAFF
In addition to changes in the regulatory framework, the government is aiming for a massive increase in officers on the street. On the staffing front, in fact, «the staff of police headquarters and police stations throughout Italy is being strengthened and increased thanks to over 3000 police officers who will enter service in August». This was emphasized by the Undersecretary of the Interior Nicola Molteni. These are «young, trained police officers who will increase territorial control activities, combat illegal immigration, and prevent social alarm phenomena such as baby gangs, maranza, drug dealers, and predatory crime». The reinforcement map will favor the most sensitive areas of the territory.
Going into specifics by area, the undersecretary explained that in Lombardy the local police stations and headquarters will benefit from the arrival of over 180 new officers from the latest training courses. The goal expressed by the undersecretary is to ensure «an important strengthening of proximity security activities», confirming commitments to the «protection and defense of our cities».
