With a single gesture, the American president managed to achieve the feat of uniting almost all Italians. Against him. Or almost. According to a survey by Only Numbers, relaunched by La Stampa, not all of the center-right is against Donald Trump: only 44% of Vannacciani consider that message an insult to the Prime Minister. A percentage that distinguishes them from the rest of the political landscape and confirms how the relationship with Trump remains particularly strong precisely in the most sovereigntist area. It is only a slice, then the data changes depending on the color of the electorate. 71.8% share the judgment expressed by Carlo Calenda, who had defined the American president as “a despicable cheap bully.”

Even more significant is the fact that 59% of respondents consider the post with which Trump has the infamous photograph “serious and offensive.” The survey, however, captures a widespread sentiment. 61.6% of Italians interpret that post not only as an attack on Giorgia Meloni but on Italy as a whole.

And 66.5% approve of the premier’s choice not to respond directly to the American president. If until a few years ago the President of the United States almost automatically enjoyed great prestige in Italian public opinion, today that credit no longer seems guaranteed. Trump’s social provocation seems to have crossed a line: when the target becomes the head of government of an allied country, many Italians stop reading it as a simple political dispute and perceive it as a matter of institutional respect. Yet, among Vannacci’s voters, almost one in two continues not to see any offense in that post.
