Italy will participate in the summit organized in Washington by the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss “transnational far-left terrorism.” According to sources from Palazzo Chigi, the government is working to participate with a political-level delegation, at the undersecretary level. All hell broke loose. In a few hours, the Italian left lost control. “It would have been more than appropriate for the Italian government not to participate in yet another propaganda initiative by the Trump administration that exploits security and anti-terrorism action for the purpose of internal political conflict and to distract from the administration’s failures on the international and external front, fueling fear of a supposed transnational red threat to democracy. It is necessary for the Italian government to clarify the contours of its participation and what it will say. If the Italian government were serious and upright, it would clearly tell Rubio that today there is no transnational red threat and that for liberal democracies the subversive danger represented by the illiberal regression of Trump’s USA is much stronger,” says the secretary of Più Europa, Riccardo Magi, who adds: “Whoever participates in the summit for the Italian government will not have the mandate to affirm this; therefore, we ask the Meloni government to reconsider and not participate in yet another propaganda show, once again subservient to those who just a few days ago requested a restraining order against the Italian prime minister.”
Echoing him is Nicola Fratoianni who – through Avs – even presented a parliamentary question: “We also want to know, in case he accepted the invitation, if he intends to urgently report to Parliament the reasons for the participation and what objectives he intends to pursue with the participation in the meeting promoted by the US Administration.”

The Five Star Movement does not deny itself either, with Alessandra Maiorino speaking about the possibility of sending an undersecretary to the summit which, “if confirmed, would be a disturbing decision” that “confirms the ideological affinity between Meloni and Trump. A desperate attempt by the prime minister to get back into the good graces of the American president even at the cost of embracing the Trumpian fascistoid model.”
