Dario Franceschini, senator and former minister of the Pd, revealed that he has Parkinson’s disease, diagnosed in 2020. The illness, he tells the Corriere della Sera, was initially “a tremendous blow,” but it did not prevent him from continuing his political activity: “I continue my work, although today I inevitably have rhythms somewhat different from the past.”

The decision to make his condition public came after years of reflection and after encouragement from doctors and therapists, convinced that his testimony could help other patients: “It would encourage many patients to come out of the shadows.” Franceschini admits: “It costs me, and a lot – For many reasons: including a certain, I believe understandable, modesty.” However, he decided to tell this “particular season” of his life to invite those suffering from the same disease not to isolate themselves: “I do it to tell all other Parkinson’s patients: do not isolate yourselves, keep living.”
Franceschini recalls the first symptoms and the suspicions of Graziano Delrio, doctor and party colleague, who had noticed his way of walking by dragging his feet. After the examinations, the diagnosis came, experienced thinking first of all about his wife and daughters. Then the temptation to hide the disease emerged: “Those affected by Parkinson’s tend to be ashamed. They speak poorly, slur, or walk unsteadily, like a drunk.”
Today Franceschini instead invites to react: “It is essential not to get discouraged, to wake up in the morning with something to achieve.” Besides treatments, he considers it crucial to stay active and have daily goals: “I don’t give up, I keep living, being there.”
