Ferrara contrasts the current situation with the era of Romano Prodi, when behind the center-left candidate there was “experience, character, collective and personal exposure, a foundation both logical and imaginative, historical and prophetic, a theorem and a poem.” Today, however, the PD leader, Elly Schlein, has the appearance of “a class president from a student assembly who seems kind and honest, which in itself would not be little.” What is missing, Ferrara observes, is “that whole which is a personal story, a convincing point of view and political command on the world and the country.” This, according to the editorialist, is “the non-substance of the PD,” a party “where the only serious things would be only the abhorred factions,” because “the rest of the amalgam was condemned as ‘failed’ by one of its cynical founders.”
