“The direction is clear, the request confident, the gestures describe, without hesitation, the verb as the only path to follow. I still want to believe. In Naples, football must be played.” With these words Lele Adani posted a video showing Massimiliano Allegri giving instructions to his team with gestures reminiscent of the famous mantra “And let’s play football” he himself launched. The post immediately reignited the long-standing debate between result-oriented and play-oriented supporters, with the current Napoli coach and Adani being two of its main representatives.
Under the video, fans unleashed their comments. A clear majority sided with Allegri, teasing Adani about Roberto De Zerbi’s heavy defeat in the Premier League, a coach the pundit has always praised. “Your idol De Zerbi played football?”, “Didn’t they play football at Brentford?”, “Master De Zerbi played football, did you see, Lele?”, “Tell us about De Zerbi.” Adani then again took a stand against the Livorno coach on La Domenica sportiva. “Why does De Rossi say this situation is different from all others? Because he leaves no room for interpretation: it includes all people who have inherited life on planet Earth. It is not just a matter for insiders: anyone who analyzes football with clarity, or even just the human body, sees a player opposing and being knocked down. This foul is not in question, it exists and that’s it. It doesn’t matter who suffered it and who committed it. If Rrahmani protects the ball, Messias pushes him and scores, they come up from Naples to complain.” After the match, Allegri had said: “I was on the bench and not even when I was ten-tenths at 15 years old would I have seen that foul well.”

Last weekend’s episode is just the latest chapter in a clash between the coach and the pundit that has been going on for ages (and frankly has also gotten a bit tiring). It all started on April 27, 2019, when, after the Inter-Juventus 1-1 match, Adani harshly criticized Max for the lack of play. An attack to which Allegri responded: “You are all theorists, you know nothing about football and that’s why you stay there. Be quiet, now I speak. There is a difference between theorizing and winning. I have won six league titles.” Following that episode, the former Fiorentina and Inter defender waged a real battle against the current Napoli coach. A debate that has fascinated many fans – turning into a real topic of discussion across the country – and which, unfortunately, does not seem destined to end.
