Immigration and work, a very delicate topic that often, unfortunately, leads to crime and illegality. It is discussed on Zona Bianca, an in-depth program on Rete 4 hosted by Giuseppe Brindisi. One who is decidedly against the criminal choices of immigrants who cannot find work is Silvia Sardone, MEP and deputy secretary of the League. She summarizes her thoughts like this: “Enough with the excuses like ‘it’s the Italians’ fault for not integrating and not giving opportunities to immigrants.’ If you want to integrate, you can, by learning Italian and working. If you want to commit crimes, go back to your country.”
It all started from the intervention, connected from Novara, of a non-EU immigrant who tries to justify the mistakes of her compatriots. When asked: “Rita, how do you respond to the fact that certain types of crimes are predominantly committed by immigrants?”.

She answers like this: “Yes, unfortunately there are too many of us here, but the truth is bitter because there are those, for example, who arrive and look for work, go to the agency and they tell them that they don’t speak Italian or have no experience or don’t have all those requirements to find all these types of jobs and especially if someone desperately tries to find a job, to earn money for a better life in the end, with all these problems around, he or she has to try to do other things around, for example dealing drugs and doing other things that are not legal.”

At that point, Sardone bursts out: “If they don’t hire you because you don’t know Italian or don’t have proper documents, it’s not that you learn Italian, no, you say no ma’am. If you are here legally, but you don’t know Italian and they don’t hire you for that, well then you will go to deal drugs… no ma’am, you go and learn Italian! That is the support that is missing in this country, that is exactly what is missing, that is exactly what is missing. One: no one forces you to come. Two: if you come, though, it’s not that you deal drugs, you come to work, to respect the rules, right?”.
