With the uncertainty lifted, all eyes are now on Sinner’s decision. The South Tyrolean, ATP ranking number 1 and dominant player of 2026 (also thanks to Alcaraz’s long forced absence), remains doubtful for the last slam. At Flushing Meadows, where he won in 2024, Jannik will only be there if there are no risks for his right knee, which has been struggling for weeks with a troublesome tendon inflammation.
The Italian has completed the tour de force away from the courts with check-ups and cutting-edge therapies to remedy the physical problem that stopped him right after his second consecutive win at Wimbledon, forcing him to withdraw from the Montreal Masters 1000 and the ongoing Cincinnati tournament.
The fresh 25-year-old spent several hours at the JMedical in Turin where he underwent new checks, specialist exams, and also shockwave therapies. Then some on-court tests for a brief training session still in the Piedmont capital, followed by a return home to Monte Carlo, where he tried some rallies on court with coach Simone Vagnozzi. Now it will be the training that gives the answer Sinner (and his fans) are waiting for: and while there is moderate optimism from some quarters also in light of the fact that several days still remain before the Flushing Meadows appointment, the decision has not yet been made.
There is awareness that, after more than a month without tournaments, the knee problem must be completely behind him to face the American slam, with three out of five sets the athletic response must be at its best. After the collapse at the Roland Garros, linked to other causes, Sinner had expressed the need to listen to his body and always put it first: therefore, the directive even in these difficult days remains unchanged. Caution and if the go-ahead for participation comes, it will only be with the definitive approval of the doctors. The humid heat expected during the New York slam and the hard court surface, not exactly a blessing for the knee, are also causes for concern.
