The success at the European Championships in Paris, with medals and world records, put her in the spotlight, but it is in front of the microphones that Curtis confirms she has an equally strong personality: “Football must be recognized for its historical and media role, but this does not justify the ignorant and arrogant comments made about our disciplines,” says the swimmer.

And then comes the phrase that sparked debate: “I don’t beg for it, but a footballer would never have come down from his pedestal to compliment me as Jannik Sinner did.” Curtis indeed recounts having received messages also from Marcell Jacobs and Mattia Furlani, while from the football world the same kind of attention would not have arrived. The thought, however, may recall some statements by Gabriele Gravina after Bosnia-Italy: “Football is a professional sport, the others are amateur, let’s make comparisons on the basis of fairness. The others are state sports, like winter sports: except for Arianna Fontana, they are all state employees.” The former president of the FIGC then clarified that he did not intend to offend athletes of other disciplines, but to refer exclusively to the different regulatory situations.

Curtis did not stop at football. Also in Repubblica, speaking about the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham held on the same days as the swimming ones in Paris, she launched another jab, this time at the live broadcasts: “What pride, a little less for the streaming live because sometimes you only saw one race or the other.
