The Superbonus remains one of the main targets of Giorgia Meloni’s criticism. In an interview given on August 14, 2026, to “Milano Finanza,” the Prime Minister returns to the impact of the measure on public accounts and indicates 2027 as the end of its burden on the State budget.

“We will finish paying for it only in 2027 and in the end it will cost us the handsome sum of 174 billion, four times more than originally planned,” says Meloni, calling the measure “a disaster” which, in her opinion, would have diverted resources from schools, healthcare, services, and infrastructure. The Prime Minister attributes the responsibility for the cost to the previous Pd-M5S governments.
The decisive step, according to Meloni, will be next year, when the Superbonus will no longer represent such a significant burden on public finances. “From next year we will no longer have this very heavy burden on our shoulders, almost 40 billion per year, double that of a Budget Law,” says the Prime Minister. The resources freed up, in her view, could help continue the path of debt reduction.
Meloni also links the Superbonus to the relationship with the European Union. “If we had not been burdened in these years by the cost of the Superbonus, Italy would have respected the debt reduction path set by European parameters,” she says.
In the same interview, the Prime Minister claims the results achieved on public accounts: the deficit/GDP ratio would have gone from 8.1% in 2022 to the current 3.1%. “It is a result that many considered impossible,” emphasizes Meloni, arguing that the recovery was achieved without cutting the main expenditure items.
