The former ATP number one and 2003 US Open champion mainly spoke about the Italian, highlighting the caution that has always accompanied his communications: “The only thing we know about Sinner is that he decided to withdraw from the Cincinnati tournament — the American’s words — I believe that, as is his style, he didn’t say more than he had to. The picture seems even more uncertain for Alcaraz. Roddick does not hide doubts about the possibility that the Spaniard might show up directly in New York without a preparation tournament: “I think for Carlos it is really difficult to come back and as a first tournament to have an event where you play best of five sets”. Adding that “for him the US Open is in doubt. I am not a doctor and I have no information, but when you take time and try to be cautious, I think coming back in a Slam would be the opposite of what he has done in recent months.”

The withdrawal of the two dominators could therefore make the American Major much more unpredictable.
