The political project of Valter Lavitola for Sigfrido Ranucci also involves internal confrontation within the center-left and, in particular, the challenge between Elly Schlein and Giuseppe Conte. This is one of the elements that emerge from the investigation documents, which reconstruct the path through which the fixer allegedly tried to evaluate and prepare a possible candidacy of the Report host.
In January 2025 Lavitola had begun working on the hypothesis of Ranucci entering the race, going so far as to commission a poll on the popularity of various public figures. A poll that the journalist himself would later help to integrate, indicating themes destined, according to him, to become central in future electoral campaigns: from artificial intelligence to digital hegemony, from the environment to ecological transition.
However, it is the chapter on the center-left primaries, as reported by ilCorriere, that captures the political balances that Lavitola and Ranucci were observing. At the beginning of April, the fixer sends the host an article dedicated to an increasingly crowded internal competition, with Conte and Schlein at the center of the scene and other possible candidates indicated as outsiders. Ranucci’s reaction is clear: “Anyway, did you see those unlikely names?”

The confrontation between the two therefore does not seem to be limited to political curiosity. In the reconstruction by the judge, those conversations are part of a broader project: to understand what space there could be for a candidate outside the traditional alignments. Lavitola even imagined Ranucci as a future Prime Minister, while he dreamed of a role as a spin doctor at Palazzo Chigi for himself.
