And even when they hide behind great ideals, in reality they only pose power problems. There is no longer the sentimental connection with the people that Gramsci spoke of.” For him, there is only one reason: “The end of the twentieth century, the defeat of the labor movement and with the advent of a spectacular capitalist revolution. Which in my opinion caused a fall of civilization. If the alpha and omega of politics – explains Bertinotti – are the competition for government, then only alliances between parties matter: society remains outside. If asked whether the left still exists, Bertinotti calls upon a special symbolism: “There are two great things that made the left of the twentieth century great. The sand and the tower. The sand is the earth. The one you tread on. The one you live in. The men and women who are inside the great daily problems: salary, pension, healthcare, school. Then there is the tower: that is the idea of society. Sand and tower means struggle and theory. Frankly, in today’s left I see no answers either on theory or on social struggle.” On today’s possible primaries, Bertinotti is skeptical: “I held them about twenty years ago. They were a great phenomenon of popular participation. A great democratic event. But these primaries today are another story. I say that primaries can exist or not. It is not important. What worries me is that after the great success of the referendum the center-left took whistles for fiascos and considered that referendum a lever for its own success.”
