Left-wing voters first and foremost demand more antifascism. Not a minimum wage. Not greater security. Not lower taxes. None of that. What they want from their political representatives is a greater commitment to stopping the possible return of the blackshirts. It seems incredible, yet this is what emerges from research conducted by SWG and inspired by the book by Domenico Petrolo “The Season of Identity. From Brexit to Trump, why pride and values matter more than wages and welfare,” published by FrancoAngeli. The starting point of the research is that for Italian voters, the recognition of their own identity, values, and world weighs more in the choice of whom to vote for than promises of economic improvement. And this applies to everyone, both right and left. For 47% of respondents, in fact, the most important thing is that a party is capable of recognizing and protecting their identity, while 39% prioritize the ability to improve their economic situation. The identity dimension prevails especially among those over 64, with 57% versus 31%, and among residents in the Center-South, with 51% versus 36%. In the North, the two needs are almost tied, at 43% and 42% respectively.

According to the survey, four out of ten Italians do not feel sufficiently respected and valued in society. The figure reaches 58% among economically weak classes, 52% among left-wing voters, and 48% among those who do not position themselves politically. Furthermore, 30% believe that no party or leader recognizes their dignity, identity, and real difficulties. And we come to the “hot” point of the research, namely the priorities of voters. Among the threats considered “very” relevant to their identity, 54% indicate a culture that reopens the way to fascism, 43% Islam, 40% woke culture and political correctness, 39% the exaltation of nationalism, and 36% immigration.

Obviously, political differences are decisive in these choices: 83% of left-wing voters mainly fear the return of fascism, while on the right the greatest concerns regard woke culture, indicated by 76%, Islam at 73%, and immigration at 71%. The paradox is that while left-wing voters insist on demanding greater commitment against fascism, the choice to continuously evoke the Ventennio has never helped the heirs of the PCI to win elections. The most striking example is precisely that of the last general elections, in 2022. Then the PD, led by Enrico Letta, bet everything on the clash between fascism and antifascism. The Democrats’ posters were half red and half black, precisely to evoke the epochal clash between good and evil. And the mayor of Bologna, Matteo Lepore, said it clearly: “We have fascism at the gates.” We know well the result of this entire media campaign: Democratic Party at a historic low (19%) and Giorgia Meloni at Palazzo Chigi. In short, the ghost of the Duce may warm the most militant part of the progressive electorate, but it is certainly not useful for gaining new support. The real problem is that this survey will presumably have also ended up on the desks of various Schlein, Bonelli, Fratoianni, Salis, and their partisan company. Who will have discovered, precisely, that voters expect more antifascism from them. And now who can stop them?
