The case involving Sigfrido Ranucci and his relationship with Valter Lavitola, accused of being the alleged mastermind behind the attack against the journalist last October, is creating tensions even within the 5 Star Movement, until now considered one of the main supporters of the host of Report.
According to internal sources within the Movement, Ranucci’s defense would have been for many 5-star members a “pro forma” position, especially among members of the Rai Supervisory Commission. However, the relationship between the journalist and Lavitola is reportedly causing embarrassment within the party. A source close to internal dynamics explains that, before definitively distancing itself, the Movement wants to “understand exactly how things stand,” but admits that the matter is “objectively inexplicable.”

What is also emerging, as reported by ilGiornale, is an internal faction led by Chiara Appendino, who on various issues has already taken autonomous positions compared to Giuseppe Conte’s line. According to reports, some members of the Movement have doubts about the handling of the Ranucci case and the choice not to openly address the topic in internal meetings. A sign of distance would also be the absence of an official statement signed by the Movement or Conte himself in defense of the journalist.

The case also puts Rai in difficulty, which has decided to convene the Ethics Committee to verify Ranucci’s professional relationships and source management methods, as well as those of the program Report, evaluating any issues related to the principles of impartiality and independence of public service.
