“Yesterday Bologna saw two squares. Piazza Nettuno represents Bologna. Thousands of people met peacefully and spontaneously to express their closeness to the family of Abderrahim Fakir. Piazza Roosevelt and the clashes, however, do not represent Bologna. Those who think of responding to violence with violence exclude themselves from the rule of law. And therefore exclude themselves from our democratic community”: thus Mayor Matteo Lepore distanced himself from the controversy over what happened yesterday at the demonstration organized to demand “truth and justice” for Abderrahim Fakir, the 43-year-old Moroccan who died during a police check at Pilastro. A demonstration that quickly degenerated into clashes between activists and agents, throwing of paper bombs and stones, cars set on fire and overturned bins. A real urban guerrilla warfare that devastated the city center and for which the mayor took no responsibility. And the mayor, after having incited the square, in short, tries to get away with it like this. Talking about “two squares”.
On the same wavelength was the secretary of the Democratic Party of Bologna, Enrico Di Stasi, according to whom the city “experienced a moment of great participation and collective closeness. Over 5,000 people peacefully gathered near Abderrahim Fakir’s family to demand truth and justice, and the words spoken by his niece Yosra best interpreted the city’s civil and democratic response to the tragedy that occurred at Pilastro.” Inevitable, then, were the thanks to Lepore for “having united the citizenry, unlike the right that only wants to divide, pretending to already know the outcomes of the investigations in a prejudicial way.”
