The case of Mario Roggero continues to divide public opinion, especially on two issues: the request for pardon and the sentence considered disproportionate. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni directly addressed the issue in an interview with Corriere della Sera. Meloni emphasized that in the jeweler’s case “greater consideration would have been desired,” not only for the single episode but for a situation that concerns every year “many, too many people.”

According to the Prime Minister, in fact, “one can identify those dynamics, both in the procedure of some pardons and in the acquittals of much jurisprudence, which are called dynamics dictated by the victims’ despair, by stress from exasperation and pain.” The Prime Minister recalled Roggero‘s background: only six years earlier, in 2015, he and his wife had suffered another violent robbery. “Who is able to judge the pain, the trauma, the stress, and the fear of this man?” Meloni asked, adding that those who do so “without the benefit of the doubt” are wrong.

She then posed a strong question: “But are we sure that at that moment he was capable of understanding? Are we sure there is a way to measure with a clock or with the code in hand when a threat has ceased or not” for a man who saw himself “one step from death, his and his family’s, twice”? Meloni explained that in an aggression situation “our brain and our body enter ‘fight’ mode” due to adrenaline, a phenomenon that also concerns trained professionals. For this reason, she criticizes the disproportion of sentences: “you cannot give 8 years to pedophiles or less than 10 years to cases of gang rapes and then condemn this jeweler to die in prison, there is a problem of proportionality of sentences.”
