These are hours of deep reflection at Palazzo Chigi. As reported by Corriere della Sera, Giorgia Meloni is considering whether or not to resubmit the amendment to the Senate that was rejected in the Chamber due to the opposing vote of some members of the majority, the so-called snipers. Within Brothers of Italy, opinions are divided: doubts are not lacking, but at the moment, the Milanese daily reads, it is “more yes than no.”

The first to push for resubmitting the amendment to Palazzo Madama is Ignazio La Russa. The idea of the Senate president is to accommodate the “female snipers” to avoid a new, sensational, rejection. In short, everything revolves around the reformulation of the gender alternation rules with a balance between the two sexes for the locked positions by the lead candidate. Or on the possibility of introducing gender alternation immediately after the lead candidate and not from the third place onwards, as was provided in the text rejected in the Chamber.

At the center of Meloni’s considerations is also the issue of timing. In case of reintroduction and approval of the amendment, also considering the summer break, the yes in the Senate would come after mid-September. At that point, the text will have to pass again to the Chamber and the final approval would come not before October. Not to mention that in Montecitorio the snipers could act again.
Also to be considered, of course, is the position of Meloni’s allies. Salvini and Lupi have expressed support for resubmitting the amendment also to Palazzo Madama; Forza Italia, on the other hand, has not yet decided and among the ranks of the Tajani party many are pushing for no. However, it is true that, in the Senate, the amendment would pass even without FI’s presence in the Chamber and the yes of all other majority members. The reflections continue.
