“We tried. The swamp won again”. Giorgia Meloni spoke on Facebook after today’s vote in the Chamber, Tuesday, July 14. The Chamber of Deputies rejected by one vote the amendment from Brothers of Italy, Noi moderati and Udc to the electoral law, number 1.1077, which provided, along with the blocked top candidate, the possibility to mark up to three preferences from the same list. The rejection, by secret ballot, came with 188 against and 187 in favor. In total, there would be 31 rogue voters.

“We tried to reintroduce preferences in the electoral law after more than 30 years of blocked lists – continued the Prime Minister -. We asked for an open vote and that everyone put their face on their vote, but the opposition wanted a secret ballot. The result shows that the left and the opposition voted solidly against. But even within the majority, several votes were missing, and this requires reflection. The amendment was rejected by a single vote. A missed opportunity for Italians, but it was right to try. P.S. The scene of the opposition celebrating as if they had won a World Cup for having prevented citizens from choosing their own parliamentarians – concluded the leader of Brothers of Italy – says it all”.
