Pina Picierno lashes out. Even after leaving the Democratic Party, the vice president of the European Parliament continues to attack her former party, with increasingly harsh words. The latest outburst comes from the presentation of the second edition of the European Conference of Ventotene. “I do not regret leaving the PD, and the things that happened over the past week only strengthen my convictions,” she said unequivocally on the sidelines of the event.

When she talks about “things that happened over the past week,” the founder of the political movement Spazio Pubblico refers to the silence of Elly Schlein following Giuseppe Conte’s words about Russia. In a long social media post, the M5S secretary stated that the Federation did not constitute a threat to Europe, or rather that “the threats that worry me are others.” According to Picierno, a reaction from the Dems should have followed these statements, but it never came: “I would have expected a reaction from the PD secretary who, as usual, pretends to be dead, does not react, swallows everything, and it is a great pity, a great pity for the Democratic Party that has completely lost its function.”

“[The PD] is no longer the home of Italian reformists – Picierno continued -, it has become an ideological-maximalist party, incapable of even reacting to the dangerous and shameful statements of Conte. That ‘stubbornly united’ repeated by Schlein sounds like the will to swallow anything and undergo the political and cultural hegemony of the 5 Stars just to try to get to Palazzo Chigi. When the secretary says that ‘the line is one and I decide it,’ and that line consists of pretending to be dead in the face of Conte’s statements, I had to acknowledge that staying inside had become useless.”

And again: “The alternative to the right must be pro-European, anti-Putin, anti-totalitarian, democratic, while currently the so-called ‘Lavrov camp‘ is none of this, because there is a cultural hegemony of the Five Star Movement that has positions much more than ambiguous on Putinism. Schlein’s great responsibility is that she never wanted to dissolve these ambiguities, never imposed the need to clarify because different things can be held together but her serious flaw is playing the part of the ‘sleeping beauty in the woods’ just to get to Palazzo Chigi by inertia, but this method does not work,” she concluded.
