The Five Star Movement is preparing for the convention on Saturday and Sunday. At stake is not only the launch of Giuseppe Conte‘s electoral campaign for the broad field primaries, but also the erection of a wall around the leader besieged by the nightmare of a possible return to the field by Beppe Grillo and terrified by some polls that would put him at a disadvantage compared to Elly Schlein.

Let’s start with Nova, the two-day Milan event (Saturday and Sunday) that closes a tour that touched almost all of Italy to gather points and ideas to put in black and white in the Five Star program for the next political elections. And judging by the “heavyweights” who will intervene, one should make the sign of the cross. Tomaso Montanari will be there, rector of the University for Foreigners of Siena, engaged for years in a battle against the government. His thesis is that the executive is essentially the heir of fascism. And during the last referendum campaign, he called the President of the Senate Ignazio La Russa a “bandit,” who sued him. Speaking about infrastructure will be Mario Tozzi, one of the symbols of the “No” to the Strait Bridge (“In case of an earthquake, if it remained standing, it would be the connection between two cemeteries”) and he has led a boundless battle against beach operators.
ANTI-ISRAEL
Then there will be the writer Ginevra Bompiani, who defined the Meloni government as “more than fascist, Nazi” and while despising both Iran and Israel, said she preferred the former because at least “it is not a genocidal state.” Who knows what the tens of thousands of Iranian men and women massacred during the revolts against the regime would have told her… But the guest star – apart from Conte and Travaglia – will undoubtedly be Francesca Albanese, also a convinced anti-Israel activist, whose extreme positions earned her the request by the French government (as well as ours) to be removed from the role of UN special rapporteur. At Nova there will also be a series of foreign economists who will try to outline the future scenarios of the world. Hoping to move away from “Bonus 110,” “rolling desks,” or various “citizenship incomes.” Grand finale, of course, with Giuseppe Conte closing both days of work.
However, haunting Giuseppe Conte’s nights is the specter of Beppe Grillo. The founder of the Movement, sidelined by the people’s lawyer, has recently been as active as he is mysterious. First, the publication on his social media of an electoral symbol with the inscription “Zero Stars Movement,” then the announcement of his participation in Fedez’s podcast “Pulp” which will air on Monday. Two clues that according to some would be proof of a new entry into the field by Grillo (an entry that pollsters estimate between 3 and 4%). However, yesterday came a flat denial from the “Pulp” editorial staff: “The fantastic commotion of statements that exploded in recent days around the hypothetical statements made by Grillo in the first episode of the new season of Pulp Podcast is truly surreal – reads the note -. For the simple fact that the words attributed to the former guarantor of the Five Star Movement were never pronounced during the recording.” Thus, yesterday a new rumor spread according to which Grillo would invite Five Star sympathizers not to vote. A thesis that would be a mockery for the man who became famous with the one value one theory…
Meanwhile, within the Movement, the big names are rallying around “Giuseppi.” The vice president of the movement, Giuseppe Gubitosi, explains that “today in the M5S I do not see Grillo nostalgics.” Even the former Five Star spokesperson Rocco Casalino rejects the possible re-entry into the field of the comedian: “He was an extraordinary megaphone, but after Casaleggio’s disappearance, honestly, I have seen Grillo more in difficulty in political and strategic choices.”
BETWEEN WEAPONS AND POLLS
The latest headache, in chronological order, for Conte comes from a Scenari Politici poll according to which Elly Schlein would be clearly ahead of the Five Star leader, eight percentage points ahead, but the Movement shrugs it off. So much so that last night Conte, speaking on Di Martedì, reiterated that “for me primaries are never divisive. But the solution cannot be to recognize that the secretary of the strongest party takes all.” Therefore, “in the absence of a third name, the only possibility is to go to the primaries, which is a word that recurs many times in the PD statute.” Then he returned to attack the PD on weapons to Ukraine: “I believe that a progressive project can only be alternative to the government action and foreign policy implemented so far at Palazzo Chigi. So if we have to be progressive, it means that the day after there is a turning point in foreign policy. If we continue to send weapons to Ukraine, what do we characterize ourselves with in a progressive sense?”.
