Here they are ready to barricade themselves. They, who have been sitting in Parliament for several legislatures thanks to blocked lists and secure constituencies, shout about democracy being in danger because of a new edition of the “scam law,” as the signs waved in Palazzo Madama say and as Francesco Boccia, the PD group leader, says: «We tried until the last moment to correct this law. We proposed real preferences».
A parliamentarian for three legislatures, Boccia was elected thanks to the detested – on the left – “Calderoli law,” also called “Porcellum,” and the “Rosatellum.” And in both cases, there was not even a shadow of preferences. It doesn’t matter, the important thing is to raise yet another alarm about the authoritarian danger of a center-right that modifies the voting system «based on contingent conveniences» (thus Simona Bonafè, a PD deputy). As if this were not the rule of the Second Republic starting from the “Mattarellum,” approved by majority.
Elections, the upheaval: the center-right move, here is which date is gaining ground
While the Senate approved, with 113 votes in favor, the new electoral law, the issue continues to dominate …
FAKE TEARS
Here is Laura Boldrini – a past in Sel, then LeU, now a PD deputy – wearing the role of the passionate defender of preferences: «They are saying they introduced them, it’s not true. Did they really want preferences? They could have voted for our amendment that really introduced them, without blocks and without tricks. The electoral law wanted by Giorgia Meloni is a scam.» But if the former president of the Chamber had all this desire for preferences, one must ask why she waited decades to show it, given that she has been sitting in Parliament for three legislatures. Also thanks to “Porcellum” and “Rosatellum.”
The Democrats are unleashed. And not just since yesterday. They have also started simulating how many parliamentarians would be elected thanks to preferences net of the blocked top candidates. «Less than one in five parliamentarians would be elected with preferences,» said Senator Federico Fornaro, who believes that for some days now «there has been a sensational distortion of reality with a return to the full choice of the voter which instead will be limited.» It is the same Fornaro elected for the first time in Parliament in 2013 thanks to the thirteenth position obtained in the – blocked PD list in the Piedmont constituency. For days from the Democratic benches another who has been hammering is his colleague Dario Parrini, who is also the vice president of the Constitutional Affairs Committee. «It is a scam law for many reasons: it deceives citizens and mortifies their right of choice,» he thundered yesterday. The day before, together with colleague Alessandro Alfieri, responsible for reforms of Elly Schlein – he had shouted about the «gross violation of democratic principles» regarding the signatures to be collected for the presentation of the lists. On September 10, he had accused Meloni of having «said no to real preferences, resorting to fake preferences. Fake because they will count for very few elected.»
Parrini has been in Parliament since 2013: first as a deputy, then as a senator. The first time he was elected “by scrolling” thanks to the very secure list in the Tuscany constituency; the second – in 2018 – he became a senator by winning in the equally secure single-member constituency of Sesto Fiorentino. One might say: but there the voter put a cross on the name. True, but that name ended up on the ballot paper moreover in a left stronghold – thanks to the choice of the party secretariat, not certainly by winning the first rounds of the constituency, as happens for example in the United Kingdom and the United States.

5-STAR HYPOCRISY
Closing with the Five Star Movement’s Alessandra Maiorino, M5S senator. For her, the one approved yesterday is a «super scam against voters. Only 18% of Parliament will be elected through preferences.» The ones she, as a candidate for the Fiumicino city council in 2013, did not get: not elected. Luckily there are the hated electoral laws without preferences: she has been a senator for two legislatures.
