This happens when tactics dominate over strategy and immediate, speculative interest is pursued instead of a beneficial long-term project.

We are talking about the psychodrama of the PD, which finds itself with a potential prime minister candidate in whom more than half of the party does not recognize themselves and on whose governing abilities large segments of the historic electorate do not have confidence. Today, at the closing evening of the Festa dell’Unità in Reggio Emilia, the secretary is expected to make the solemn announcement of her entry into the coalition primaries. Modes and dates will follow, hopefully soon.
However, the eve of the entry into the race is not characterized by that positive and electrifying atmosphere that precedes great events. On the contrary; concern and long faces prevail even among the historic PD figures who three years ago worked to pave the way for the then vice president of Emilia Romagna at the Nazareno and to dig the grave for her leader, Stefano Bonaccini. They had chosen her, unknown and supposedly manageable, instead of him, strong and on the rise, hoping to have more influence. A serious mistake, indeed there are many repentants; and among them perhaps even Giuseppe Conte, who sent grilline camel troops to the democratic primaries to favor Elly.
Forced to acknowledge that their attempt to deceive Schlein, suggesting she act as a weaver and wait for the next round to avoid burning herself out, has failed, the democratic dinosaurs are considering clinging to bureaucracy to trip up Elly. If necessary, they are even willing to team up with the reformists. Thus emerged, as if it were not known from the start, this joke disguised as a serious matter of the PD secretary’s term lasting three years and expiring just a few months before the general election and after, if not close to, the coalition primaries. When they say the patch is worse than the hole: if the congress is redone, indeed, not confirming Schlein a few weeks before the vote would be impossible if the secretary presented herself having won the primaries, suicidal if the coalition consultation were still to be held.
But there is another farce that the democratic body is staging just to block Elly’s path to Palazzo Chigi. If she becomes prime minister, the reasoning of the red eggheads goes, we must give up the Quirinale, because Conte would not grant us the pairing and we have no desire to send him to the Colle: fools yes, crazy no. However, this is also half a lie: both Giorgio Napolitano and Sergio Mattarella were appointed president of the Republic when the head of government was a democratic member.

Result: there is no way out. The big party, by choosing Schlein, has gotten itself into a tunnel with no exit except at a very high price. The situation is so desperate that even the name of Robertino Speranza bounces around as a face of Covid, if it were not that he would be mistaken for the usher.
Moral: for years the left has reproached Giorgia Meloni and the center-right for lacking leadership but at the moment of the party they cannot find the right outfit. The candidates for the Quirinale, coincidentally, in the current majority are so many that one hand is not enough to count them…
