Take care of them. Even today they shout about the black Internationale, attack Giorgia Meloni, go crazy. They are the ones who get offended if you dare to call them communists; theirs is the classic double standard with the political opponent. The latest in the series is Beppe Provenzano, a bold PD leader, who once again invokes global conspiracies to attack the prime minister. For the Nazareno representative, there exists a “black Internationale with which Meloni has never cut ties.”
If he repeats it on the street, they call the neuro. All this quickly moved from Repubblica to Facebook with a promise: they will be “the barrier.” For the victory of Afd in Saxony – this is Provenzano’s thought – «Putin was the first to celebrate, but not only him. Trump also celebrated. The entire black Internationale is working to dismantle Europe and strike democracies. We will act as a barrier against the black Internationale with which Meloni has never cut ties.» And indeed, if you call them communists, they get offended. It’s their style: if you define Meloni or FdI as “fascists,” “black,” “black Internationale,” for part of the left it is political analysis. If you call the PD or certain leftists “communists,” “reds,” “red Internationale,” they immediately become victims of an offensive and anachronistic label. They are stuck on slogans.
No one wants to compare today’s PD to yesterday’s PCI even though it does everything to resemble it. For them, however, Brothers of Italy has not indicated the path of a modern party, but must be mixed with a non-existent black Internationale… It is precisely the left that has long maintained the habit of using the historical accusation as a permanent weapon, while reacting badly when someone does the same against them. It’s a game that never changes: heavy labels only count in one direction. Moreover, Provenzano himself does not even try to distinguish himself from a picturesque tone that ill suits a contemporary political leader. And he does not hesitate to use heavy vocabulary typical of a certain polarization of Italian politics. For him, the expression “black Internationale” serves to indicate the network of relations between sovereignist and conservative rights: Meloni, Salvini, again Orbán, Netanyahu, Trumpian circles, and whoever else you can think of.
That 2025 intervention remains epic in which he had already said that Meloni and Salvini “have participated over the years in the construction of the black Internationale” together with Netanyahu. The thesis of this truly old PD is that Brothers of Italy, while presenting itself as a conservative and much more democratic party than them, would never have made a clean break with certain environments and international alliances of the radical or nationalist right. On the opposite side, Meloni and FdI have been replying for years that they have no totalitarian nostalgia and that relations with Trump, Orbán, or Netanyahu are political alliances on issues such as immigration, national sovereignty, and opposition to Islamism, not “black Internationale.”
But it is evident that “the accusation” is the classic left-wing theorem to delegitimize the right in government. We are facing the usual clash they are used to for attacking Berlusconi yesterday and Giorgia Meloni today. This tendency to demonize the right is worrying. Also because this is how old hatreds are risked to be rekindled, which only harm Italian democracy. Or should we ask ourselves if this is precisely the goal of a left that never manages to win political elections and needs to invent theorems? They should make peace with their brains.
