Pro-Palestinian squares confirm themselves as the chosen runway for a radical-chic left desperately seeking a cheap revolutionary thrill. An elite conformism that wears the Palestinian cause as a fashionable accessory to show off in the historic center’s salons.
The problem is that besides being unpleasant in itself, this reality clashes with the fabulous narrative of the “pacifist and democratic squares” as soon as ideological fanaticism is caught on camera. On Wednesday, while Parliament was discussing the anti-Semitism bill, in the pro-Palestinian crowd filled with left-wing politicians, the crowd raised clear slogans openly supporting fundamentalist militants, chanting the song made famous by La Zanzara («Long live Hamas, Hezbollah, eternal glory to Nasrallah») up to «Hamas, jihad, Popular Front, free Palestine from the river to the sea».
The paradox reaches comic heights with the presence in the front row of Laura Boldrini, PD deputy and undisputed vestal of palace feminism. The champion of political correctness, always inflexible on endings, schwas, and gender etiquette lessons, finds herself walking in the exact same human and political perimeter as those proudly waving the banners of the darkest religious fundamentalism. The reaction of the Democratic passionaria in front of the blatant anthems to the holy war? A confused, grotesque, and lost “Who’s there?” – before condemning Hamas flags – betrays all the charlatanism and impotence of a political class completely incapable of containing the fanatics it itself fosters just to scrape together a handful of votes.
But the absolute masterpiece of hypocrisy is signed by the “revolutionaries” of our home. While on talk shows and in aligned newspapers they moralize about civil rights, patriarchy, and inclusive language, in the square the well-off Rome protesters shout shamelessly that they are “united with the resistance,” winking at fundamentalist militias that make the submission of women, stoning, and theocracy their founding pillar. A simply aberrant ideological short circuit: Italians are nitpicked for a misplaced word in the posh salons, but those who want women veiled, silenced, and submissive to the imam are applauded and justified. It is the definitive, irreparable failure of the caviar left. Just to oppose the government, Israel, and the West, the old red bourgeoisie proves willing to march side by side with the darkest fanatics. A revolutionary farce incapable of drawing a line between propaganda and moral complicity with terror.
