The landslide vote of East Germans for Alternative for Germany in Saxony-Anhalt (44%, 39 seats out of 83) has thrown the European left into despair and at the same time highlighted the usual, fascinating class racism that lurks in their salons every time the polls return an unwanted result. Which is often also the triggering reason.
Progressives do not express themselves with crude insults or direct slander. Heaven forbid, the parameters of political correctness and the fear of completely alienating the electorate impose a strict facade etiquette. But they still adopt a systematic paternalism, degrading and therefore even more unpleasant. If you vote left, you are a conscious and enlightened citizen; if you choose the far right, at best you are a poor naive person manipulated by “gut feelings” and “fears,” at worst a nostalgic who marches in goose step.

Faced with an almost clean sweep, the conditioned reflex of our progressives was eloquent. The comments moved along established lines: the “cognitive disqualification” of the voter and the moral invalidation of their choice. For PD senator Filippo Sensi, “fear won” and “it is deep night in Magdeburg”; for Angelo Bonelli (Avs) the right only “fans the anger” deceiving citizens; for Laura Boldrini voting AfD is outright affirming a “neo-Nazi party.” Repeat offender Stefano Bonaccini, while realistically recognizing that AfD attracts “the vote of those in greater difficulty,” ends up implicitly labeling these voters as lost subjects who have stopped looking from the “right side,” essentially reaffirming his recent theorem about the “ignorant” who vote right.
Through headlines and profiles focused on “poorly educated men and with economic difficulties” (La Repubblica) or on the profile of “Man, 45 years old, poorly educated” (Corriere della Sera), the Italian press also reduces AfD’s electoral base to an army of “losers.” Dismissing anxiety about migrants and the high cost of living as crude class insecurity. The equation is always the same: those who do not vote radical chic do not make a rational political choice or a legitimate demand for change but are victims of “functional illiteracy.” A sociological analysis as lazy as it is snobbish, consistently disproved by the numbers. In Saxony-Anhalt AfD won overwhelmingly across the board, but especially among a now “common” voter, that is, one penalized by inflation, bills, and insecurity, whom the left claims to want to protect but in fact treats like a mentally challenged person to be re-educated.
Meanwhile, political news records the paralysis of traditional forces. The latest Insa federal poll certifies the collapse of Friedrich Merz’s CDU-CSU below the psychological threshold of 20% (at 19.5%), against a steady AfD at 29%. In this scenario, Chancellor Merz finds himself politically squeezed; the SPD tries to climb back waving the old idea of a wealth tax and taxes on the rich; Sahra Wagenknecht’s Bsw advances (at 4% nationally and already decisive in the East territories).

Crushed between an AfD that has surpassed the “invisible threshold” beyond which cordons sanitaire become ridiculous and ineffective and a left incapable of self-criticism, the conservative center risks extinction. But the real lesson coming from Germany, which progressive salons stubbornly continue to ignore, concerns the failure of ethical demonization. What pushed AfD to the brink of government were not ghosts of the past, but 170,000 former abstainers brought back to the polls and tens of thousands of impoverished workers who no longer accept being told by a talk show how to vote. As long as the left decides to respond to people’s material needs by dismissing dissent as a symptom of cultural regression, the black avalanche will only grow. And the “deep night” will not be in Magdeburg, but in the headquarters of social democrats throughout Europe.
